Shavonne Reed embraces her mom

Our History

For as long as I can remember, my mother never missed a day of work. She was fiercely dedicated, yet year after year, she fell short of advancing in title or pay. At her peak, she earned just $23,000 annually to support my sister, my brother, and me.

When the pandemic hit and her health declined after a decade of stress, I realized she wouldn't live to reach the average life expectancy. This harsh reality led me to reflect deeply on the systemic barriers that contributed to her struggles.

After founding OPUA Agency, focusing on behavioral change marketing, I uncovered a wealth of research on fair work practices—or the glaring lack of them. I found that Black women, in particular, feel misaligned with employers' DEI policies and programs. Even more troubling, Black women earn just $0.58 for every dollar white men make.* Through my work and personal experience, it became clear that Black women are underrepresented in leadership, and these inequities significantly impact their health. My mother’s story was a painful example.

As a mother of two daughters, these facts hit home even harder. Witnessing my mother's battle with chronic stress and preventable diseases fueled by systemic inequities showed me the unique health hazards we face. Her story, and mine, are unfortunately part of a much larger narrative.

Today, I’m sharing my journey, coaching emerging professionals, and creating behavioral change marketing campaigns to inspire others to prioritize their #FutureHealthNow. My hope is to leave a legacy where at least one million people are heart-centered in their professional and personal lives, achieving health, happiness, and harmony. ❤️
